A Special Note Regarding the Sun Solaris Version
------------------------------------------------
This version of the Sun Solaris version is the version which has been
shipped to Sun Microsystems for evaluation as their SunFax product. As a
result you will see references to SunFax within this version.
SunFax is a trademark of Sun Microsystems and when Faximum releases its own
version of this product all references to SunFax will be replaced by Faximum.
Please note also that certain advanced features of Faximum's normal fax
product line (including the WP macro, line printer intercept, and others)
are not a part of SunFax. They will be part of Faximum's Solaris product.
Please note that the help files in this Early Availability Product are still
being finished and some of the information may be incomplete. Please do not
hesitate to contact Faximum Technical Support should you have any questions.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused by these deficiencies and are working
to remedy them.
==============================================================================
I. Preparing to Install the Software
---------------------------------------
1. Verify that your system is running a supported version of the operation
system and that the modem you plan to use is recommended for use with
Faximum. (See the information below.)
2. Select the server machine.
Select one of the machines on your network which is to act as the fax
server for your network. The fax server machine is the one that will
be connected to the fax modems.
Faximum Client/Server is designed to allow multiple client machines
access the fax services of one or more fax servers. You are permitted
to install the client software on as many systems as you wish as long
as (a) they are connected to a network with access to the machine that
acts as the fax server and (b) the fax server machine has a properly
licensed copy of the software installed.
3. Make sure you have sufficient disk space on the server and client
machines to install the software.
Note that currently the software must be installed in the
/opt directory. (i.e. /opt/FAXserver amnd /opt/FAXclient).
While the next release will permit installation in any directory
this release must be installed in /opt. If this is a problem,
create a symbolic link from /opt to the desired installation
directory.
The server package requires about 3.5 of space.
The client package requires about 6Mb of space.
The client package also requires the CDE Motif shared library be installed.
If you are running Solaris 2.3, you will need to install the SUNWmfsmc
package (included on the media provided with Faximum).
If you are running Solaris 2.4, you will need to install the SUNWmfrun
package (included on your Solaris 2.4 media).
4. Complete the registration form (attached to the end of this file).
***** IMPORTANT INFORMATION *****
Note that in order to complete the configuration of the Faximum
Client/Server software you will need to obtain a coded serial number
and activation key from Faximum to enable your software. The
registration form is also your request for an activation key.
Faximum will respond within two business days with the necessary codes.
Note that in order to complete the form you will need to know the system
ID for the server machine. You may obtain this by typing in the command
'sysdef -h' on the server machine.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Supported Hardware and Operating Systems
........................................
This version of the Faximum Client/Server Fax software is designed to work
with any Sparc compatible system running Sun Solaris 2.3.
Note that while faxes may be submitted from character terminals, the Faximum
Server requires access to a graphics console or X terminal in order to
administer the product.
While this software will probably run on Solaris systems prior to 2.3, it has
not been tested on such systems and users are recommended to contact Faximum
Technical Support prior to installing this software on pre-2.3 systems.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Supported Fax Modems
....................
In general, the Faximum Client/Server Fax software has been designed to work
with any Class 2 or 2.0 (EIA-592) external fax modem.
If you are uncertain whether your modem is Class 2 or 2.0, send the following
command to the modem:
AT+FCLASS=?
If the response contains the digit 2 then it will probably work (at least to
some degree) with the Faximum Client/Server software.
Note that with Class 2 and 2.0 modems much of the low-level fax protocol is
handled by the firmware in the modem. This means that problems sending or
receiving faxes may be caused by the modem's firmware and not by Faximum's
software. If such problems are reported to Faximum Technical Support and
are determined to be modem problems then the user will be asked to contact
the modem manufacturer for assistance.
The modems listed below have all been used with some degree of success with
Faximum. The modems listed in the first group have been found to be markedly
superior in operation to those in the second group.
Recommended Fax Modems:
all MultiTech fax modems
all Telebit fax modems
all ZyXel fax modems
Compatible Fax Modems:
Computer Peripherals fax modems
Intel FaxModems (but not SatisFAXtion modems)
Practical Peripherals fax modems
Supra
US Robotics modems with Class 2 fax support
most Rockwell-based modems
Note that at the time this file was written Hayes does not support Class 2
fax operation with any of their modems.
Faximum Software sells MultiTech 14,400 Data/Fax modems. Please contact
us for current pricing (the price as of August 1994 was US$199).

II. Installing the Software
-----------------------------
1. If you are installing the software from tape:
Extract the files from the solaris directory on tape into a temporary
directory on the system that is to become the fax server machine.
For example:
cd /tmp
tar xvf /dev/rmt/0 solaris
This will create a sub-directory called solaris containing the following
files:
README
faxserver.tar
faxclient.tar
The README file contains a copy of these installation instructions.
If you have retrieved this software by FTP, uncompress the tar file
and use tar to extract these three files:
uncompress faximum.solaris.tar.Z
tar xvf faximum.solaris.tar
2. As root, untar the server files:
# tar xvf faxserver.tar

6. Copy the faxclient.tar file to other HP-UX machines that you wish to
act as clients and repeat the above two steps to install the Faximum
client software.
==============================================================================
III. Configuring the Software
------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Server Configuration
....................
Note that in order to complete the configuration of the Faximum server
software you will need a serial number and activation key from Faximum
Software. As mentioned in Section I earlier, these are obtained by
completing the registration form and sending it to Faximum Software.
As part of the configuration process you will need to edit several text
files. You may use any text editor you are familiar with such as vi,
emacs, or HP's vuepad.
1. Edit the file /etc/sunfax.conf and change the lines that begin:
key =
serial =
to match those shown on the form sent to you by Faximum Software.
2. Edit the file /opt/FAXserver/dev/pcmcia and change the line
that begins:
device =
to reference the serial communications port that you will be
connecting the modem to.
You must disable this port for normal logins or else the system
login processes will conflict with the Faximum Server software.
Also edit the line that begins:
tsi =
so that it contains your fax phone number. For example:
tsi = "1 604 926 8182"
(Use only digits, spaces, and the + symbol.)
Also edit the line that begins:
class2-type =
so that it reads:
class2-type = auto
Note that the Faximum server ships with a set of default cover sheets.
While these are sufficient for testing the product, you ought to define
new cover sheets that properly identify your company. You can do this
by running the foolowing program:
/opt/FAXserver/lib/newcovers
and answering the appropriate questions.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Client Configuration
....................
If you are installing the client on a machine other than the machine the
server is installed on, you will need to do the following.
1. Edit the file /usr/openwin/lib/app-defaults/Fax and change the line
that reads:
fax.server: localhost
to reference the system that will be acting as the fax server. For
example:
fax.server: manet.company.com
2. Or, if you prefer, you can define (in the /etc/hosts) an alias for the
fax server. For example:
133.45.67.23 manet.company.com faxhost
and change the definition of fax.server: in app-defaults/FAX
to reference faxhost instead of localhost
3. Edit the file /opt/FAXclient/lp/model and change the line that reads:
FAXHOST=localhost
to define FAXHOST as either faxhost or the actual name of the fax server.
4. Note that if you are planning to use the submitfax tool it will try to
connect to 'faxhost' unless another host name is specified either by
using the FAXHOST environment variable or by using the -h flag
(i.e. submitfax -h server.name)
***** IMPORTANT NOTE *****
If you are running NIS or NIS+ then you will need to copy the changes made to the
/etc/hosts and /etc/services to the NIS/NIS+ master. The change to the /etc/services
file can be found on the last line.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Starting the Fax Daemons
........................
After you have configured the software, you must start the background
processes which schedule the faxes and control the modem.
This will be done automatically when you reboot your system. You can also
do this manually by running:
/etc/init.d/sunfax start
Should you wish to terminate the fax daemons, type:
/etc/init.d/sunfax stop
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Starting the Fax Client
.......................
To run the Faximum Client software, type:
/opt/FAXclient/bin/fax
To make this easier, you may wish to:
(a) put /opt/FAXclient/bin in the search path of those who wish to use
the Faximum Client software; or
(b) copy /opt/FAXclient/bin/fax to a directory that is already in your
users' search path (perhaps /usr/local/bin, or /usr/bin).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Accessing Help
..............
All of the documentation for the Faximum Client/Server product is stored
on-line. This can be accessed through the Faximum Client software by selecting
the Help menu. It can also be accessed directly by running the
HyperHelp viewer:
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/openwin/lib /opt/FAXclient/lib/hyperhelp /opt/FAXclient/help/fax.hlp
===========================================================================
IV. Removing the Software
---------------------------
To remove the server software:
1. Stop the Faximum daemons by typing (as root):
/etc/init.d/sunfax stop
2. Type the following (as root):
pkgrm FAXserver
To remove the client software:
pkgrm FAXclient

V. Resolving Problems and Contacting Technical Support
---------------------------------------------------------
Faximum Technical Support may be reached by phone at +1 (604) 922-7311
between the hours of 8:30am and 1pm Pacific Time.
==============================================================================
VI. Known Problems with this Release
--------------------------------------
Please note that while this software has been extensively tested within
Faximum's engineering labs and has been used by several Beta test sites,
the software is sufficiently new that problems may be expected to arise
from time to time.
In order to minimise the disruption caused by such problems, Faximum Software
will extend special support to all EAP (Early Availability Product) customers.
When calling during normal support hours (see above), please identify yourself
as an Solaris EAP customer. Should you need support after normal support hours,
please call the main Faximum number, (604) 925-3600, identify yourself as
an Solaris EAP customer, and ask for special technical support.
With the current EAP release (RC13) there is one known defect that may cause
problems while using the Faximum Client. During any single session, the client
software is prone to exit abruptly if asked to preview an outgoing fax or
view an incoming fax more than once. This problem sometimes also occurs when
in other parts of the product. We are working on this problem and hope
to have a fix available shortly. If you are able to reproduce this problem
reliably we should very much appreciate learning the details.
We also acknowledge that significant work remains to finish the on-line help.
Please also note that the WordPerfect fax macro is not available with this
release.
Comments and suggestions regarding the software are always welcome. Please
send your comments to support@Faximum.com or fax them to (604) 926-8182.
